We recommend using a Power Cutting Mill PULVERISETTE 25 for a cracking of the present dry batteries. |
Cutting Mill PULVERISETTE 19 large speed 50-700 rpm |

Equipment: |
disk milling cutter rotor with indexable inserts and fixed knives made of hardmetal tungsten carbide (WC) + without sieve cassette |

We like to mention that even partily charged battery can cause chemical reactions. For this, all pieces should be discharged completely before grinding. Else, ground particles might start burning or can react under formation of harmful gasses etc.
We also like to mention that no wet battery should be ground. Such can cause strong acids which will lead to corrosion on coils, rotor bodies, housing etc. Mostly hydrogen gas will be formed when strong acids react with pure metals. Then explosions can be caused by this. Only pH neutral samples should be fed, even higher moisture content can start corrosion – samples should be as dry as possible (or grinding chamber should be dried directly after the grinding trial).
The complete sample got ground within 10 minutes. Afterwards, only a few particles inside the collecting vessel use to be > 2 cm.
Even a faster feed rate might be possible for comminution of sample. Also higher amounts of sample can be ground this way.

Remaining sample got ground without any problems by using a 6 mm sieve cassette. It took about 2 minutes to comminute the ~ 520 g of sample.
Only a few pieces use to lie loose on top of the sieve cassette. Cleaning can be performed rapidly by vacuuming with a soft brush. A grinding of higher amounts of sample should be possible.
About 8-10 minutes of grinding might be required for grinding of 2 kg of sample.
