The sample was ground with our Vibratory Micro Mill PULVERISETTE 0 for demonstration. With such a type of mill, samples are ground very gently (no significant temperature increasing during a grinding process).
We used the desired stainless-steel mortar and grinding ball. Typically, agate or zirconium oxide is used for pharmaceutical applications. With steel equipment, the grinding process is noisier and we used the optional sound absorbing hood to cover the mill.
One bag of B1 tablets were used. The tablets were crushed after the first minute and no large fragments were found inside the sample. After a total grinding time of five minutes, majority was ground to a fine powder, but also few fragments were found with ~ 500 µm length were present.
We proceeded grinding for ten and fifteen minutes, but without significant improvement (comparison between 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes). Still some agglomerates with ~ 500 µm were present / or formed by the heavy steel grinding ball. We stopped the mill after 15 minutes and brushed out the ground sample. Fine sample dust was attached to the lid (by electrostatic charge) and needed to be brushed down, too.

After 15 minuets of grinding, the sample was still free flowing; some agglomerates with up to ~ 500 µm were present. |
