250 ml grinding bowl made of sintered corundum (Al2O3)
+ 15x20 mm Ø Al2O3 grinding balls
Feed quantity:
20 g (≙ 200 ml)
Feed Size:
< 5 mm
Additive:
+ 150ml ethanol
Grinding time:
60 min
Final fineness:
81,1% <20 µm 19,5% <1 µm
Comments:
To avoid overpressure, we ground the sample in steps of 5 minutes, followed by a programmed pausing time of 10 minutes. After several cycles, the outside temperature of the bowl should be checked (remain below 75°C); grinding time or programmed pausing time might be readjusted afterwards.
After a total grinding time of 60 minutes, fineness has been checked with our Laser Particle Sizer ANALYSETTE 22 Compact. About 81% use to < 20µm as desired. Already 19,5% use to be in sub-micron range.
Longer grinding times are still possible to improve the grinding result.
Probably grinding time can be decreased when a change of ball size to 10mm Ø might be done after 15 minutes of pre grinding with 20mm Ø balls.
With the used balls and bowl made of sinter corundum (as desired), also higher abrasion will be found, compared to other ceramic materials (like zirconium oxide, or silicon nitride).
