For a metal free grinding of the soft pine tree needles, we recommend using a Vibratory Micro Mill PULVERISETTE 0 to grind the sample after embrittlement with liquid nitrogen.
Sample needs to be dry and brittle for a proper dry grinding with a ball mill. The pine needle sample use to be too soft for a grinding without liquid nitrogen. For this, we placed the sample and mortar into the optional Cryo-Box and pored liquid nitrogen over for embrittlement. After sample, mortar and grinding ball have been chilled, we started the grinding process.
Evaporated nitrogen has been refilled during the grinding process. After 10 minutes of grinding, the pine needles became ground to a fine powder.
After the remaining nitrogen has been evaporated, cold sample has been packed and sealed to avoid a condensation of moisture until room temperature has been reached.
